I know I'm late in this game, mostly because I never access the Amazon Appstore for Android from my browser.

However, since I was writing my earlier post and viewing Amazon.com at the same time, I decided to flip over and see what the free app today was. It sucked. But, I did discover a cool feature on the Appstore called, "Test Drive."

This is a cool feature that lets you test drive the application on a generic Android device inside your browser before you purchase it.

Why HDR

Real life scenes often have a wide range of light intensity, which cannot be captured by a camera. In a photo of such a scene the bright areas look washed out and everything in shadows is pictured as a black spot with no details. The HDR technique allows you to capture details in bright and dark areas and have them merged in a single photo.

HDR photography is widely adopted by professional photographers. Wouldnt it be nice to have an HDR in mobile phones?

The problem is that HDR requires taking several differently exposed images in series, which must be precisely aligned and then fused. Both Galaxy Note 2 Leaked Images Were Actually Fakes

A few days ago we saw not one but two leaked Galaxy Note 2 images that looked pretty similar, and pretty interesting at the same time. Both photos featured a Galaxy Note 2 design similar to that leaked Galaxy Note 2 bezel image we saw in the preceding days, and they matched previous reports.

The Galaxy Note 2 appeared to be sporting the same general design lines of its Galaxy S3 cousin, and pretty much matched our own expectations. But it looks like both images were fake leaks, with one inspiring the other we did advise you to take everything with a grain of salt, as we didnt have any official confirmation for either model.

It turns out that the second leak we showed you the press photo-like Galaxy Note 2 image was actually a Photoshop mockup done by designer Daniel Uy (see original above). The mockup itself was created based on that leaked front panel that revealed the slimness of the phablets bezel, and was then used to create the blurry image featured by Know Your Mobile the first leaked image we showed you.

In other words, it looks like Samsung managed to keep the design of the Galaxy Note 2 under wraps so far, at least for the time being, but we wouldnt be surprised if the final Galaxy Note 2 version looked similar to these fake leaks. Not to mention that, with 10 days to go until the company unveils this new phablet version (the Unlocked event is scheduled for August 29 in Berlin, Germany), we could see the real thing get leaked after all.

A Little Light on Security

Motorola recently polled 1000 prosumers regarding their mobile attitudes and use. Their results were published in this nice little graphic:

One of the surprising results is down in the lower right-hand corner of the graphic: "Nearly half of people log into unsecure wireless networks." This in addition to the 25% who store banking information on their wireless phones. It's amazing to me that at the end of 2011, we're still having this conversation: AVOID UNSECURE NETWORKS LIKE THE PLAGUE. 

I think any breach or loss of one's electronic information would violate Rule 1.15. I couldn't imaging explaining to the state's bar association (or your malpractice carrier) the reason your client's information was lost.

One big question is what would you do with your phone if you lost it? What about the data that's stored? I suggest one of the many "wipe" or backup programs available in the Android Market. One of my favorites is Where's My Droid? by alienmanfc6. There's a free or pro version ($3.99) available.

The Orbiters approach is seven times steeper and twice as fast compared to a commercial airliners approach. Also, because during descent it is an unpowered glider, you only have one chance to get it right.

The included manual and tutorials will familiarize you with the head up display (HUD) and explain the different approach and landing phases. After some practice and your first successful touchdown, you can try crosswind or night landings.

Striking realism

Flight dynamics, the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) systems, and the HUD are simulated accurately and in great detail.

Follow the guidance symbol in the HUD to stay on the heading alignment cone (HAC) and align the orbiter with the runway centerline, and then follow the flare reference symbol to perform the preflare maneuver. Dont forget to keep an eye on the visual landing aids like the precision approach path indicators (PAPI) and the ball/bar light system to stay on the outer and inner glideslopes, respectively.

Let the autopilot control rudder, speed brake, gear, and chute, or control them yourself. If you dare, simulate system failures like a stuck speed brake or HUD/guidance malfunctions.

A wide range of options

Take your place in the commanders seat in the stunning virtual cockpit, or view your flight from different external camera perspectives. Choose between accelerometer (tilt) controls or (virtual) analog sticks to steer the Orbiter. Land on both shuttle landing facilities, and fly either final or full approaches by selecting one of the four possible HACs. Siri Alternatives on Android OS

The Siri feature on iPhone is simply cool. One of the reasons iPhone remains the go-to-device is because of innovations such as Siri.

However, as this post points out, there are some alternatives available on Android that come close. I'm testing the Speaktoit Assistant app right now.

Personally, I don't really care to speak to my "personal assistant." Quite frankly, most of the stuff I'd say would be nonsense. Although I guess that one time I needed to "remember" how to tie a bow tie would be important. Of course, then if I was tying a bow tie I'd be insane, have achieved the "upper crust," or become President of the United States, none of which sound all that appealing.

But, if you're dying to be like an "iPhoner," then go ahead an try one of the listed apps.

Spoiler alert: all of the reviews (and I agree) say Vlingo Virtual Assistant rocks.

Google Street View Coming to Google Maps in iPhone Browser Soon

iOS users who have upgraded to iOS 6 or bought an iPhone 5 may suddenly be missing on a lot of Google Maps features previously available in the native app. Fortunately for us Android users, Google is religiously updating Maps for Android with more features and functionalities, such as Street View, turn-by-turn driving directions, public transportation, and the like.

But if youre on iOS 6 or another platform, fret not. Google is still actively maintaining the mobile web version of Google Maps. Yes, thats HTML5, and this means its cross-platform (assuming you have a compatible browser). If youre using an iOS device or any other mobile devices with a capable browser, just fire up mobile Safari and head on to maps.google.com. NY Times David Pogue says its still an acceptable alternative to the native app.

You wont get spoken directions, but youll get written directions, public transportation details, live traffic reports and, of course, Googles far superior maps and data. (In two weeks, youll be able to get Street View this way, too, says Google.)

As an update, Pogue says Google is enabling Street View from mobile web, which might be interesting for folks who want a virtual tour of interesting locations and cities around the world.

Now the question here is this. Facebook earlier eschewed HTML5 as a viable alternative to native apps. Mark Zuckerberg seems to have been very disappointed with the Facebook app on Android, which was essentially HTML5. But mobile web does offer cross-platform compatibility without the headaches associated with parallel development in different platforms.

Will mobile web be good enough for Google and for Google Maps users?

Spirit was initially targetted at custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod, on which FM app availability is limited.

If you dont know what a ROM is, then your phone is likely Stock and un-rooted.

Support for stock, un-rooted devices is now present, but limited, and various bugs are being worked on.

If your stock phone has a working, stock FM app you are happy with, then Spirit may be of little use to you at present.

If your stock phone does not have a working, stock FM app, then FM is likely impossible, except Bionic, Droid 2 & 3, Defy.

Some phones will never work and nobody can make them work because the hardware is disabled. This includes Atrix, Nexus S, US Galaxy S2s, Galaxy Tab, Droid (1)/Milestone, P999 G2x, Galaxy Spica.

I understand the prices may seem high, but this is a niche app. Price experiments say higher prices will keep this app alive & improving.

How many other Real FM apps are on the Market ? Two: 1 for Galaxy S only and one repackaged Motorola app.

Why ? Its extremely difficult. Google does not support FM apps. They and the carriers seem to dislike free Over The Air FM.

Kindle Fire HD integrates Bing instead of Google

We earlier learned that a few major companies are trying to reduce their dependence on Google for content and services. For example, Apple is ditching YouTube on iOS 6 and is also moving away from using Google Maps. Amazon is itself going for Nokia Maps instead of Google Maps in its new Kindle line. But in an even more drastic move, Amazon actually integrates Bing search instead of Google in the Kindle Fire HD.

Eliane Fiolet of Ubergizmo was able to get a hands-on experience with a Kindle Fire HD, and were quite surprised to find that the tablets Silk mobile browser had Bing as the default search engine.

Bing comes as the default for Silk, Amazon says, but users will have the option of switching to Google or Yahoo if they wish, writes Eric Abent at Slashgear. Eric speculates that Microsoft may have sponsored Bings prominent placement in Amazons Silk browser, although the company would not comment on the matter.

But given that Microsoft is having a hard time getting users to switch from Google to Bing on the desktop, this could be one of their ways of aggressively pushing their homegrown search engine to reach more users. Some commentators, however, say that Amazon is doing this on their own accord, given that Google may already be challenging Amazons dominance in e-commerce, with its own sale of ebooks, music and the like.

The question now is this. Will more smartphone and tablet manufacturers follow suit?

Kindle & Viewsonic The Battle Begins

Amazon recently announced, and is now selling, it's newest addition to the Kindle brand of e-book readers. The Kindle Fire is getting high praises for its design, price, and features.

Well, Viewsonic announced that it will enter the sub-$200 market of Android-based tablets with its newest addition, the ViewPad 7e. The ViewPad 7e runs Gingerbread, has a 7 inch screen, SD slot, 1 GHz processor, and 4 GB of internal memory.

While I think lawyers need the 10 inch tablets to be effective, some of you will be satisfied with these 7 inch beauties.

Samsung gets the upper hand with Apple in Japan

Its not all doom and gloom for Samsung after losing one of the biggest tech cases of the year because they just scored a victory in Japan. A Tokyo court ruled that Samsung did not violate an Apple patent that involved syncing mobile devices and computers. It was obviously the Kies software that Apple was going after.

Samsung said, We welcome the courts decision, which confirmed our long-held position that our products do not infringe Apples intellectual property.

To make matters worse for Apple, Tokyo District Judge Tamotsu Shoji ordered Apple to pay the costs of the lawsuit after his verdict.

C4droid (C/C++ compiler) v3.35 Apk

C4droid is a C/C++ compiler for Android.
C4droid already has almost full C language support, so you dont need to wait when it will be added.
You can to write your own applications on the Android phone, and run them. This app uses TCC and uClibc, so it has full support of ANSI C and some support of ISO C99. C4droid can be used for educational purposes or to practice in C language.
Some components of C4droid are LGPL-licensed. You can download used source code of TCC and uClibc on their websites (But TCC had been modified by me, so I recommend to email me to get modified source) C4droid includes Android Terminal Emulator so you can to run your application comfortably.

To get C++ support you need:
0) Install C4droid, launch it and wait for unpack.
1) Install GCC plugin for C4droid from Android Market.
2) Launch GCC plugin for C4droid and press install to internal memory (or to external if you have root rights)
3) Select G++ compiler in C4droid preferences.
4) Use iostream, not iostream.h
5) Add using namespace std; to your program (before int main)
Also C4droid supports SDL/NativeActivity for GUI now, install SDL plugin for C4droid to use it (only GCC/G++ compiler is supported, so you need GCC plugin).
(SDL is detected with #include SDL.h, NativeActivity is detected with #include android_native_app_glue.h)

Quick manual:
If you have found a bug or app is not working, email me.
If app crashes on start, check that enough internal memory is available (not 64Kb).
Root is not required, but if you have enough internal memory OR you have rooted your device, you can get C++ support, read further. (some comments about iostream not found are fake, their authors just didnt follow installation instructions).
Long click save button to save as, long click run to run with arguments.
Result of compilation (binary) is placed in /data/data/com.n0n3m4.droidc/files/temp, because sdcard doesnt have permission for execution by default.
If you have Illegal instruction error, using internal compiler (TCC), install GCC plugin, GCC supports softfloat (by default).

Updating from lower than 3.0 versions:
WARNING! Uninstall this app before update! Else app will crash. Its well known Android bug (details: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1227 ).
