The Wall Street Journal reports that the Motorola Xoom cost about $278 to build, which is about $33 more than its competitor, the Apple iPad. I'm trying to find some sales numbers, aside from Motorola's hype, which will give some specifics as to the price point. I suspect that sales of the Xoom are less than expected, and really only to early adopters. I also suspect that when Apple introduces the new iPad at tomorrow's event, Motorola will have to rethink its pricing. Although many true Android-ifytes won't jump ship to Apple, those fence sitters (including my wife) would willing opt for the new iPad, or a lower-price version.
Futurelawyer has a great post on his decision to choose a Viewsonic gTablet. I think his analysis is spot-on, although its application for most "out-of-the-box" users will be off (see this post about customizing the gTablet).
I think the biggest problem is that hungry Android users are willingly waiting for a competitive device that doesn't take a lot of fidgeting to customize it although we're Android users, so isn't customization kind of a requirement?.
I had considered grabbing a Xoom device for use in my practice, but dare I say it, I may be falling off the fence?
Caught myselfjust in time.
